The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
